Since it is not always clear what is needed to get a wind turbine up and running here is a little guidance: First you need the Scirocco combo. In addition to that you need a tower. Take a look in the list above, the easiest for setup and maintenance are the ARE tilt-up towers. If you have sufficient space for guy wires, we recommend an ARE tilt-up tower, since they make installation and maintenance the easiest. The rule of thumb for tower height is to place the turbine hub at least 30 feet plus one blade length above any obstacle in a 500 feet radius, with a minimum height of 60 feet. That really is the absolute minimum, higher is better. Our section on turbine site selection has more details. For grid-tie use that is all you need as far as the above list goes. In case you want to use a Scirocco wind turbine off-grid please contact us. It can be done through AC-coupling, but takes a little more planning.
To actually install a Scirocco (or to be honest this is not a DIY job, for safety and warranty you will need an installer), there are a few more items on the list, besides wind turbine, inverter, and tower: Tower foundation excavation/concrete, grounding rods, ground wire, cable conduit or direct-burial Teck90 cable, Delta surge suppressor, thermal breaker, panel breakers, stop-switch, permits, and labour.
The Scirocco package includes: One Eoltec Scirocco E5.6-6 wind turbine, one Power-One 6kW Aurora PVI-6000-OUTD-US-W Maximum-Power-Point-Tracking (MPPT) inverter, programmed specifically for the Scirocco, one Power-One PVI-WIND-BOX, and a thermal breaker box (containing a thermal breaker, a terminal block that accepts up to 2 AWG wires, and three Delta LA303 surge arrestors, build-into an enclosure with a grounding bar). The Aurora inverter is UL1741/CSA listed. This package is intended for use of the Scirocco tied to the electrical grid, such as with net-metering.
The Eoltec Scirocco and Power-One electronics come standard with 5 years of warranty. There is an extended warranty available for the Aurora inverter, PVI-6000-OUT-US-W, taking the Aurora inverter to 10 years total warranty. See the list for pricing.
The manual stall brake is a highly recommended option, as it allows for the turbine to be stopped at all wind speeds. It consists of a handle at the foot of the tower to put the blades at stall-angle, causing the wind to loose its 'grip' on the turbine and stopping it. The stall brake can be used at any wind speed. Once the blades spin at less than 40 RPM the three alternator phases can be shorted out with the stop switch to completely stop the turbine and keep it stopped.
Without the stall brake the turbine can only be stopped in low winds, when the rotor spins at less than 40 RPM, by shorting out the alternator phases. The alternator should only be kept shorted-out for winds under 80 km/h, higher wind speeds may overpower the alternator and quickly burn it up if it starts spinning.
Scirocco wind turbines and Power-One inverters are generally in stock, so there is no lead-time.
We are an official distributor for Power-One inverters. The Aurora inverters come standard with 5 years of warranty. An extended warranty is available, which will take it to a total of 10 years of warranty.
The wind inverters are MPPT based using a 16-point table, and can be used with other wind or hydro turbines if the turbine’s power curve is available (linking either frequency or voltage to output power, we can help you develop an MPPT table). The inverters are stackable, to increase the total output power, and we can program them with the MPPT table of your choice before shipping to you.
The very high-efficiency solar Aurora inverters are all dual-channel, allowing for two independent arrays that both use MPPT for maximum output. Channels can also be combined in case a single array is used. There are versions with and without internal combiner and DC disconnect available.
The more popular models of the Aurora wind and solar inverters are normally in stock, so there is no lead-time.
Solacity Inc. also offers the larger 50kW and 100kW PVI-Central series of solar inverters, meant for large arrays. These are very high quality, and high efficiency inverters. They come standard with 5 years of warranty, 10 or 15 year extended warranties are available. Lead-time for the PVI-Central inverters is 6 – 17 weeks (depending on what is in stock in North America).
We also supply the full line of Easy Control remote monitoring and sensor equipment for use with the Aurora and PVI-Central inverters.
If you have the space, a tilt-up tower is generally the best way to install a wind turbine. They are relatively cheap for their height, and make turbine installation and maintenance easy and safe by allowing the tower to be tilted down. The towers kits listed are made by ARE in Oregon. These are high-quality guyed, tilt-up, pipe towers, including couplers, end fittings, cables, rigging hardware, turnbuckles, and ground anchors. All tower components, except pulleys and zinc-plated bolts/nuts/washers, are hot-dip galvanized. The tower consists of 21-feet lengths of 5" schedule-40 grade B. The tower kits include a special adapter to bolt on the Scirocco wind turbine. These towers have been engineered to withstand 150 km/h (90 mph) wind, and 3/4" ice loading.
If you have a local (and cheap) source for 21-feet 5” hot-dip galvanized schedule-40 grade B pipe it may be more economical to order just the tower hardware kit without pipe. In addition to supplying the pipe you will also have to drill all the boltholes for the couplers in the pipe.
Lead-time for ARE towers is 6 weeks. Shipping charges are not included in the listed price; customs and brokerage fees are included. These towers ship from Oregon by ground freight. Depending on destination it will cost between $1000 and $2500 to ship these towers, with the west coast being cheapest. Tower kits without pipe are cheaper to ship (approximately half the price of shipping with pipe).
ARE tilt-up towers can be raised and lowered using, a truck or tractor, using a set of pulleys or a winch. However, for customers that are going to do lots of raising and lowering of their tilt-up tower a permanent electric winch will make life so much better (not to mention safer!). The electric winch hoisting kit for raising/lowering 4" or 5" tilt-up towers includes a worm gear power winch with 1.3 hp motor (800-2000 lbs. load rating, 8-13 fpm line speed), 8" coiling drum, 275' x 1/4" galvanized wire rope with eye termination, 3" (1.5T) pulleys (qty. 4), and 1/2" safety shackles (qty. 5).
As mentioned, if you have the space for guy wires, the better tower option is an ARE tilt-up. However, for those that do not want guy wires we offer self-support Rohn SSV lattice towers at great prices! Everything you need to install a Scirocco is included with the tower (except for the foundation, though anchor bolts are included).
The towers have been engineered for winds up to 100 mph, with 3 seconds gusts up to 120 mph, and up to ˝ inch of ice loading. If your location requires higher loads please contact us, heavier-duty towers are also available. All listed Rohn towers include step-bolts for climbing, and an anti-fall safety cable, and slider.
Also included is a 9-feet tubular stub-tower that mounts on top of the SSV tower (i.e. a 100 feet SSV tower becomes 129 feet with the stub), with a mounting flange for the Scirocco turbine. The stub-tower has climbing pegs, and is hot-dipped galvanized. The stub-tower is needed to for proper blade clearance of the Scirocco at all wind speeds. It also makes for less tower disturbance of the airflow, and therefore quieter turbine blade sound.
Hinged feet are available as an option. They do not really make this a tilt-up tower, but they do allow for the tower to be bolted together on the ground, and then raised in one piece by a crane. The rational is that the additional cost of the hinged feet pays for itself in reduced crane cost.
Rohn towers have a lead-time of 6 weeks and ship from Peoria, IL.
If you want a sleek profile without wires then this is the way to go. We offer a 60’ monopole for the Scirocco as a stock tower (this is a stepped monopole). Other heights are available as well, but need to be engineered specifically. The monopole is hot-dipped galvanized, and includes step-bolts and an anti-fall safety cable. Lead-time for these towers is 6 weeks, and they ship directly from the manufacturer.
We offer Sundanzer’s line of 12/24 Volt DC refrigerators and freezers. These are extremely efficient; their 5.8 cu. ft. fridge uses only 77 Watt/hours per day @ an ambient temperature of 21 Centigrade! They form a perfect complement to a solar powered off-grid cabin or cottage, and pay for themselves from the first day by savings in the PV modules and batteries that would be needed to run a regular fridge.
